About
Chris Brickell is Programme Co-ordinator of the Gender Studies Programme at Otago University, in the new Department of Sociology, Gender and Social Work.
Chris has written many articles and book chapters on theories and histories of gender and sexuality, including the award-winning book 'Mates and Lovers: A History of Gay New Zealand' (Random House, 2008). Other areas of interest include consumer culture, social analysis, symbolic interactionism and visual history.
Chris continues to research male homoeroticism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a focus on space, visuality and life stories. A new book-length project is a cultural history of young people in New Zealand, with the emergence of the 'teenager' as a key concern. Once again, the visual, the spatial and the biographical are central foci. The project asks how professional and lay knowledges about youth refract and rearticulate wider cultural preoccupations; and what do ordinary lives tell us about profound social shifts?
